Weekly Horror Roundup: ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Clayface’ Headline a Comic-Con Trailer Blitz

This was the week the studios opened their fall books, and they did it the way everyone does in late July. They pointed their biggest trailers at San Diego Comic-Con and let the timing do the shouting. Three major genre trailers arrived inside seven days, two of them built around characters audiences already know, and nearly every release date they carried lands between mid-September and Halloween. Last week the story was the genre reselling its own past. This week the story was studios stacking the autumn calendar and betting most of it on faces you recognize.

One name even showed up twice. Mike Flanagan wrote one of these movies and unveils another project on a Comic-Con stage this weekend. Here are the stories that actually moved.

‘Resident Evil’ Finally Shows Its Hand

The clear headline landed July 23, when Sony released the first full trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. The interesting part is how little it looks like any Resident Evil movie you have sat through before. There are no trench coats and no gun-fu. The camera stays tight on Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier whose ordinary shift falls apart around him. Sony is selling this as a reinvention rather than a sequel, and for once that word holds up.

Cregger made Barbarian and Weapons, so the pitch is a filmmaker who likes trapping regular people inside buildings that have plans for them. He wrote the script with Shay Hatten of the later John Wick films, and the story is original rather than a scene-by-scene port of any single game. Trades report it is set in the series’ Raccoon City, with a small supporting cast that includes Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry and Kali Reis. Early listings put the runtime near 95 minutes, which is not yet official but reads like a deliberate choice for a movie selling nonstop panic.

Why it matters is simple. A recognizable brand is going to one of the most in-demand directors in horror, and he is steering it back toward survival horror instead of the Milla Jovovich action era. Resident Evil opens in theaters and IMAX on September 18, first in line among the fall’s marquee horror releases.

‘Clayface’ Turns a Batman Villain Into Body Horror

One day earlier, on July 22, DC Studios released the trailer for Clayface, and it is not playing the superhero game at all. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, a rising actor whose body stops obeying him, and the footage is far more interested in what he loses than in what he becomes. Skin sags and splits. The trailer sells this as body horror first and comic-book lore a distant second.

The talent list is the reason to pay attention. James Watkins directs, and his Eden Lake and Speak No Evil are proof he can make discomfort feel like a physical injury. The screenplay comes from Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, working from a story by Flanagan, and the pitch reads like Flanagan’s usual concern with the person trapped inside the monster. Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella lead the supporting cast, with Matt Reeves, James Gunn, Peter Safran and Lynn Harris producing.

The context worth knowing is where this sits. Clayface is a standalone story slotted into the same Gotham as Reeves’ Batman films, and reports peg it as an R-rated entry, which is still an unusual swing for a studio superhero picture. Whether it holds that nerve or sands the creature down for a wider crowd is the open question, and no trailer can answer it. Clayface reaches North American theaters on October 23, with international dates starting October 21.

Jessica Chastain Plays the Monster in ‘Other Mommy’

The third trailer of the week is the quietest and possibly the meanest. Universal put the full Other Mommy trailer online on July 21 after running it exclusively in theaters ahead of The Odyssey, where it built enough word of mouth to arrive online already wanted. Rob Savage directs an adaptation of Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, from a script by Nathan Elston. James Wan produces through Atomic Monster, alongside Blumhouse and Spin a Black Yarn.

The hook is the casting. Jessica Chastain plays both Ursula and the thing that arrives wearing her face, which means the film cannot lean on a creature design to tell mother and monster apart. Arabella Olivia Clark plays the eight-year-old daughter whose point of view anchored the book, with Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Karen Allen and others filling out the house.

Malerman’s novel worked by staying at a child’s eye level, and that is a genuinely hard trick to pull off on camera. A marquee actor in a dual role is a strong start, though the whole thing lives or dies on whether Savage keeps the perspective low and refuses to explain too much. Universal has Other Mommy in theaters on October 9, moved back from an earlier May slot.

Evil Dead Burn Moves Into Halloween Horror Nights

If the trailers point at the fall, this one tells you where to stand once you get there. On July 22, Universal confirmed that Evil Dead Burn is becoming a Halloween Horror Nights maze at both of its U.S. resorts. The house opens August 28 at Universal Orlando and September 3 at Universal Studios Hollywood, running select nights through November 1, with tickets on sale now.

The route walks guests into the Price family’s remote vacation home and lets the Necronomicon do the rest, turning visitors from witnesses into Deadites. It is a logical destination for a series built on people trapped somewhere isolated with a book that will not shut up. Universal has framed the setting and arc while keeping the specific scares quiet, and it says more houses are still coming.

The timing is the interesting part. Evil Dead Burn is the sixth film in the franchise, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, and it opened softer than Evil Dead Rise earlier this month. A theme-park maze is a clean way to keep the brand in front of people through the fall, whatever the box office did. The open question is which side of Evil Dead the house commits to, the gore or the gallows humor that has kept the series alive for more than forty years.

Shudder Lays Out an Odd, Deep August

For the counter-programming crowd, Shudder revealed its August slate on July 21. The four new films share almost nothing. There is a snowbound Yeti picture with Corbin Bernsen and William Sadler, a body horror road trip called Hellcat, a comedy built entirely from fake local TV ads called Buffet Infinity, and an Australian revenge story titled Penny Lane Is Dead. That is either a programming philosophy or the lack of one, and either way it makes for a strange month.

The catalog side is where August gets serious. Twelve titles land on the first alone, a possession block arrives August 3, and Threads, the 1984 nuclear nightmare people describe surviving rather than watching, drops alone on August 17. The pick of the month is quieter. On August 1 Shudder adds a documentary called George A. Romero’s Resident Evil, about the adaptation Romero planned and never made. In a week defined by Cregger’s reinvention, a film digging up the version that died in development is the kind of rhyme the genre rarely hands you on schedule.

What Mattered Most

The story with the longest reach is Cregger’s Resident Evil. It pairs a franchise everyone recognizes with a director whose stock has rarely been higher, and its September 18 date puts it first in line to test whether the fall belongs to reinvention or repetition. Clayface is the more surprising swing, and Other Mommy has the scariest single idea, but Resident Evil is the one the rest of the season will measure itself against.
