When it comes to positive marriages, Grey’s Anatomy has an issue. The only couple to stand out is Ben and Bailey, giving us a look at what can really be when people communicate.
Okay, so there is Webber and Catherine, but do we really pay that much attention to them? The problem with this couple is that they’re not on the show together enough to give us a look at what a successful marriage can be.
People watching TV need to see that successful relationships exist, and they need something to guide them in making their relationships just as successful. That means Grey’s Anatomy needs to do better.
Ben and Bailey Communicate
We’ve seen the highs and lows of Ben and Bailey, including when they even broke up so that Ben could start his surgical career.
In the end, Ben came back, and it was clear that he was always the one for Bailey.
He supported her ambition, while she supported his need to switch careers every five seconds.
No, she hasn’t been happy with him doing that, but she’s supported him when he has jumped ship.
There have been times when they’ve argued, and we know that Ben has slept on the couch now and then, but by the end of these arcs, we see the two communicate and move forward.
They are there for each other, and they listen rather than react.
Grey’s Anatomy has done a wonderful job of showing that good communication can often be all it takes for a marriage to work, and yet, it has struggled with every other couple out there.
Jo Needs to Survive
There is one couple that offers hope that marriage can work out. It’s all about Link and Jo.
The problem here is that Grey’s Anatomy is threatening to break the couple up in the most permanent way possible, with Jo’s life on the line at the end of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 fall finale.
She needs to survive, not just because she’s one of the characters who has had the most growth throughout the series.
We need to see how a couple can move forward after facing their own issues.
After all, there were points on Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 that it looked like they wouldn’t make things work, as Link retreated back into some of the things that make him toxic.
Jo worked through it all with him, and as Link opened up more, they were able to work through their problems.
We saw another hint of this during Grey’s Anatomy Season 22, as Link lashed out while he tried to speed through rehab due to his fear.
Then there was the conversation about faith and baptism, which led the two of them to share their own beliefs and feelings.
Couples won’t always agree on topics, but they need to be able to talk to each other and share their feelings and experiences to make informed decisions together.
The only way the show can continue is to give us more of the couple, which means Jo has to survive the birth of her twins.
Meredith and Nick Offer Hope
We don’t get to see Meredith and Nick all that much, but there is hope with this couple.
We’ve seen how a man can come in and be there for his partner’s children.
Nick hasn’t once tried to parent Zola, Bailey, and Ellis, but he has been a supportive father figure for them when they’ve needed it.
However, there were moments when it didn’t look like they could work, and part of that came from Meredith’s fears; fears that were only natural for her.
We once again saw how communication can help change everything, as they opened up and looked at the situation from the other’s perspective.
My worry with these two is that if they stayed on the show longer, they would break up.
After all, there’s no fun with a happy couple, is there? There needs to be some sort of drama!
However, drama doesn’t mean a couple has to break up.
We just have to see how they work through the disagreements.
There’s nothing wrong with showing how parents can co-parent, and that is necessary given the situation some viewers will be in.
However, Grey’s Anatomy struggles to portray successful couples, and it’s time to change that.
