‘Cape Fear’s Penultimate Episode Is Packed With Game-Changing Revelations

Cape Fear‘s penultimate episode puts the full extent of Max Cady’s (Javier Bardem) manipulations on full display as Anna (Amy Adams) decides to fight back, going to the source of Max’s own trauma, his family, in hopes of stopping him from destroying her own. She’s a bit of a mess, though, so things get messy. Buckle up, kids, because it’s quite a ride. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Cape Fear Episode 9, “The Scar.”

What happens when Anna investigates the Cadys?

Packing a gun just in case, Anna heads to Bluff’s Point on the Cape Fear River expecting to find Crystal’s (Juliette Lewis) houseboat, but detours to Max’s childhood home instead. There, she meets his father, Robert Cady (guest star Ron Perlman), who is fiercely protective of Crystal and sends her away. Still searching for answers, Anna tracks down Crystal at a local bar, but after getting sidetracked by her own bad habits and more than a few shots of booze, she wakes up aboard Crystal’s boat. Oof.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Max tells the visions of his dead wife and teenage son he has “just a few more things to do” before joining them.

On Crystal’s boat, Noa (CCH Pounder) is frantically texting, prompting Anna to ask her to dig up everything she can find on Ms. Crystal Delilah Cady. Crystal has already confiscated Anna’s gun for “safekeeping.” When Anna presses her about why she still follows Max, Crystal admits she knows exactly what he’s capable of and keeps photos of his crimes as insurance, believing they’re the only thing stopping him from coming after her. She also hints that Amy Brancato (Kathleen Scott Paul), Max’s former mistress who took the blame for his wife Melissa’s murder, had her life completely unravel after Max reentered it, warning Anna that when Max wants something to happen, “he can do anything he wants.”

The duo head over to Amy’s stepmother Brenda’s house, where Anna takes her gun back on the sly. During their girls’ bonding trip, Brenda reveals she got her facial scar escaping from a psychiatric clinic before she learned to start sleeping with the guards for an easier means of exit. An interesting bit of lore to drop. Let’s remember that for later.

Anna spots Amy’s trailer, breaks in, and discovers a wall covered with newspaper clippings about Max, as well as childhood photos of Amy and Crystal together, and pictures of Crystal with a baby boy who has a distinctive scar running down his rib cage. There is a close-up on the scar for the audience to get a good look. Let’s call it Chekhov’s Scar.

She also notices Crystal wearing Melissa’s necklace. She quietly pockets the photographs before leaving.

Anna tells Crystal about a girl Max once mentioned, someone he seduced and destroyed, named Lila. Anna asks if Lila was actually her and whether the little boy in the photographs is Max’s son. Crystal admits both are true, revealing she eventually gave the boy away. She also reveals that Amy told her Max would talk to her at night, and she eventually discovered hidden recordings that are now aboard the boat.

Back on the boat, Anna confronts Crystal about wearing Melissa’s key necklace, and Crystal flips a switch, telling Anna that Melissa “didn’t deserve that life.” Well, that isn’t good; looks like Max perhaps didn’t kill Melissa, after all. Anna pulls a gun on Crystal and puts her in the ship’s hold.

Hoping to turn Max against Crystal, Anna calls him and claims Crystal murdered Melissa after escaping from a psychiatric institution while pregnant with his child, then reveals they had a son together. But Anna quickly realizes Crystal and Robert are working with Max after a text arrives telling Crystal she “better have her” when he gets there.

Robert ambushes Anna and locks her in the ship’s hold. While down there, she finds the hard drive with the recordings Crystal kept of Max talking to Amy.

During a scuffle, Anna realizes the strange teenage boy living with the Cadys, Luke (Max Mattern), is Crystal and Max’s son after spotting the same scar from the photographs. She tells Luke the truth about his father, but Crystal and Robert call her a liar. After Crystal stabs Anna through the hand, all hell breaks loose, as Luke implodes on his mother and grandfather. Anna escapes by diving into the river moments before Max arrives.

What happens to Tom while he is in jail?

In jail, Tom (Patrick Wilson) receives an unsettling visit from Max, who warns that a friend will soon deliver him a “gift.” Later, Tom finds Max’s gift: a noose made from bedsheets and a cell phone. When it rings, Max tells him the only way to keep his children safe is to kill himself, even cruelly invoking Tom’s brother’s suicide to drive the point home. Tom refuses to back down, threatening Max, instead.

What happens to Natalie while she is locked up with Neveah?

At juvenile detention, Natalie (Lily Collias) is being bullied and gets into a fight before Neveah (Malia Pyles) steps in to defend her, declaring, “She’s mine.” Later, Neveah uses a hidden cell phone to call Max, who promises he’ll get her out soon, but only after she finds Anna. He then orders Neveah to kill Natalie so Anna will experience the same pain he has, telling her he’ll be “so proud” of her, that he loves her, and promising to free her if she goes through with it.

What she doesn’t know is that Nat was watching her.

Natalie confronts Neveah about her feelings, which Neveah denies. Later, Natalie jumps Neveah in her cell, but it turns into sex. In the afterglow, Nat asks if Max made her do all of it. Neveah reveals that Max told her to break into her house, spike the tea with acid, seduce her brother, and make him bite off his own toe. But she wanted to hook up with Natalie. She tells Nat that Max wants Neveah to kill her. In the end, she refuses to give up Max.
