Lionsgate has shifted the release dates of three of its bigger movies. Mel Gibson‘s two new films centered on Jesus and Johnny Depp‘s new movie have moved dates.
What are the new Resurrection of the Christ 1 & 2 and Day Drinker release dates?
According to new reports from Deadline, Gibson’s The Resurrection of The Christ Parts One and Two have shifted release dates. Part One is now set to arrive on May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day), while Part Two will move to May 25, 2028 (Ascension Day and Memorial Day Weekend).
Previously, both films were set to premiere in 2027, with Part One set for March 26, 2027 and Part Two set for May 6, 2027, which would’ve allowed the films to release on Ascension Day and Easter, respectively, in theme with the film’s story.
The sequels will once again be directed by Gibson, with Jaakko Ohtonen replacing Jim Caviezel as Jesus in the two films. The film will also star Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, Kasia Smutniak as Mary, mother of Jesus, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, Lorenzo James Henrie as Judas Thaddeus, and more.
Gibson has previously teased that he has co-written two different scripts for the project, with the first one described as “an acid trip” that will take audiences to “other realms.” Lionsgate also shared a first look at the film, which you can see below:
In a separate release date shift, Lionsgate has also officially set the release date for Johnny Depp’s upcoming supernatural revenge thriller Day Drinker. The movie will now occupy Resurrection’s previous date of March 26, 2027. Alongside Depp, the film also stars Madelyn Cline, Penélope Cruz, and more. The movie is directed by Marc Webb, and written by Zach Dean.
Day Drinker follows the story of “a private-yacht bartender (Cline),” who “encounters a mysterious onboard guest (Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming,” according to the film’s logline. For Depp, it’ll be his latest movie since 2024’s Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
