Scream Tops the Domestic Box Office

    Date:

For the first time since 2000, a Scream film has topped the domestic box office. Per Deadline, the “requel” of the popular slasher franchise earned $36 million over the 4-day MLK holiday weekend, enough to bump Spider-Man: No Way Home from its month-long perch at No. 1.

Scream’s take was considerably more than Scream 4’s paltry $18 million opening back in 2011, actually close to its $38 million total domestic box office, and more on par with the openings for Scream 2 ($32.9 million in 1997) and Scream 3 ($34.7 million in 2000).

Critics and audiences awarded the fifth entry in the long-running series with a 76% and 84% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, ensuring the film has at least some legs throughout the next month or so.

Spider-Man may have dropped to No. 2, but he continues to play like a champ. The Web-Head collected another $26 million over the 4-day weekend bringing its domestic total to a whopping $704 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing film ever (domestically speaking) ahead of Black Panther ($700 million) and behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million), Avengers: Endgame ($858 million), and Avatar ($760 million).

Worldwide, Spidey swung past $1.625 billion having collected $926.3 million abroad. It became the highest-grossing film of all time in Mexico with $72 million, the No. 2 movie of all time in Brazil ($50.4 million), Central America ($12.6 million), and Ecuador ($7.9 million). Again, this is all without China where the film has yet to — and may never — open.

Meanwhile, Sing 2 continues its surprising run. The animated sequel collected another $11 million over the 4-day frame, despite being available on PVOD, and has earned an impressive $122.1 million after four weeks.
