Real Time host Bill Maher has admitted he is open to voting for Vice President JD Vance in the 2028 presidential election if the Democratic Party continues to back “radical” and “nutty” ideas.
Speaking with Jonathan Karl on ABC’s This Week, Maher touched on how Vance recently appeared on his HBO show. The comedian said that Republicans are more open to talking with him and “taking their beating like a man,” as opposed to Democrats, whom he called “cowardly.”
Maher went on to air his frustrations with the Democrats, noting how “their party is being taken over” by socialists. “Every day I hear about a new very radical guy,” he said before adding that he feels “very good” about his decision to start speaking out against the party ten years ago, even though it lost him fans.
“I wasn’t gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the Left,” he explained. “I didn’t change really on what I thought about the Right. But I can’t sit and just not notice stuff, which people seem to want to do because it’s all about my team or your team. But yeah, there’s some crazy stuff. You know, when we’re cheering for the Intifada… cut! I’m out.”
When Karl asked if his vote is “up for grabs” in 2028, Maher responded, “Yes… My vote is in play. Because it can’t be Trump running. So I’m not living in communist America. I mean, I know that the talking point is that it’s not communism, it’s socialism. Okay, I’ve read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths… They say things like ‘takeover of key industries’… That’s communism! You know, there is a definition.”
Karl pointed out how Trump is “doing that too,” to which Maher replied, “Of course, yes.”
Maher kept his focus on the Democrats, saying, “This new wing with all the energy… It’s not just a few people anymore. Every day I read about a new person in Colorado and Wisconsin, somebody who is saying some variation of, not ‘defund the police’ [but] ‘abolish the police.’ No prisons, no police. Like, what world do they think we could possibly live in under these conditions? It’s just a level of nutty that… I’m so glad that whenever it was, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going along.’”
When asked point-blank if he could see himself voting for Vance in 2028, Maher said, “Yes. If this is the Democratic side, yes.”
