Taylor and Jackson were close friends for many years. It’s easy to understand the connection: Both were former child stars who went on to immense global fame – as well as controversies and scandals. Taylor was just 12 when she starred in the classic National Velvet, her first starring role. Jackson was 11 when The Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back” shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Taylor presented awards to Jackson on the American Music Awards in 1986 and 1993 and on the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989. On the latter show, she said, “I would adore Michael Jackson whether he was the world’s biggest, greatest star or not, but it so happens that he is the greatest and perhaps one of the most gifted music-makers the world has ever known.”
When Taylor made her first and only appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in February 1992, the talk show legend asked about their unlikely friendship.
“He’s like my brother,” Taylor said. “There’s a lot of similarities between us. We [were] both show business children. We started very young, had no childhood to speak of and went through the loneliness of that … He loves animals; I love animals. We’re both shy. We actually have a lot in common and we can talk to each other on so many different levels.”
She was also asked about their friendship during an appearance on Larry King Live. “We just became really good friends and talk to each other about everything. We’re very much alike. We both had horrible childhoods. Well, working at the age of 9 is not a childhood. He started at 3. That certainly isn’t a childhood.”
Jackson honored Taylor for her humanitarian work at a Jackson Family Honors event in 1994, after the first accusations of child molestation were levelled against him the previous year. In presenting the award, Jackson said “In the midst of my recent trials and tribulations, Elizabeth stood by my side with unwavering strength and support.”
Taylor’s acceptance speech was really just an opportunity for her to vouch for his character, which she did: “Michael, we who know you more intimately than others acknowledge the suffering you have endured because we have suffered with you. But in the midst of our deepest anguish, we have known that you would prevail through this dark hour.”
Taylor was married for the eighth and final time (to construction worker Larry Fortensky) at Jackson’s Neverland Ranch on Oct. 6, 1991.
