    Date:

Dior Sauvage colognes are some of the most popular scents for men on the market. But with so many variations of this classic scent, it’s tough to know which one is right for you.

You probably know the difference between an EDT, EDP, and Parfum when it comes to strength, but it turns out the different strength Sauvage formulations smell distinctly different from one another.

Unless you own them all, working out which one you prefer can be a challenge. So in today’s article, I’m running through the different variations of Dior Sauvage Cologne you can buy and rank them from best to worst.

    We’ll be covering:

    1. What Are The Different Dior Sauvage Colognes?
    2. Dior Sauvage EDT
    3. Dior Sauvage EDP
    4. Dior Sauvage Parfum
    5. Dior Sauvage Elixer
    6. Bonus: Eau Sauvage

#1 What Are The Different Dior Sauvage Colognes?

    dior sauvage set

The Dior Sauvage colognes range is probably one of the most loved men’s fragrance sets of all time. Since its release back in 2015, the Sauvage range has made waves in the fragrance industry and become one of Dior’s best-selling colognes.

The Sauvage range currently consists of:

    • Dior Sauvage EDT
    • Dior Sauvage EDP
    • Dior Sauvage Parfum
    • Dior Sauvage Elixer

And each of these formulations smells slightly different from one another.

The main difference between each of these Sauvage colognes is the strength of the fragrance. The EDT is the weakest, and the Parfum is the strongest.

But as we’ll see in today’s article, there are also some subtle differences in how each of these fragrances smells.

So without further ado, let’s jump into our Dior Sauvage cologne review and start with the EDT…

    #2 Dior Sauvage EDT

    sauvage eau de toilette

The EDT version of Sauvage was the first to release back in 2015 – and boy, did it make its mark on the world of designer fragrances.

Formulated by Dior’s in-house perfumer, Francois Demachy, the EDT is a beautifully crafted fragrance that has quickly become one of the most popular colognes in the world.

The EDT opens with a bright and citrusy blast of bergamot before drying down into a warm, woody base.

This makes for a fresh and versatile scent that can be worn all year round – whether you’re headed to the office or out on a date night.

The beauty of this fragrance is its ability to turn heads. Especially upon its release, a man could walk down the street and have multiple women stop and ask about his scent.

Whether it be through attraction or simply to learn the name so they can buy it for their husband, women freaking love the scent of Sauvage.

Nowadays, it’s a well-known scent, and is arguably overused by men trying to get compliments on how they smell. As a result, it could be said that it has run its course and should take its place on the backbench of the perfume greats.

Thankfully, Dior has slowly been releasing new formulations and strengths of the classic 2015 release, so men have been able to mix things up as new Dior Sauvage colognes become available.

    #3 Dior Sauvage EDP

    sauvage eau de parfum

The EDP version of Dior Sauvage was released in 2018, three years after the EDT.

This formulation is a step up in strength from the EDT, and as a result, it also has a slightly different smell.

While the EDT opens with a citrusy blast of bergamot, the EDP takes things in a more spicy direction, with star anise and vanilla making an appearance.

This makes for a slightly sweeter and more complex fragrance that still dries down into that classic woody base.

If you’re looking for an upgrade on the EDT but don’t want to go too far outside of your comfort zone, then this is definitely the scent for you.

It’s slightly more sophisticated and grown-up than the EDT, but still has that youthful exuberance that made the original so popular.

Plus, it performs way better than the EDT, as a result of its increased strength. You can expect around six hours of longevity from this scent, which is perfect for a day at work or a night out on the town.

The only downside to this fragrance is its price tag. Higher strength means a higher price point, so it’s definitely not cheap. But as they say, you get what you pay for…

    #4 Dior Sauvage Parfum

    sauvage parfum

After another year of success, Dior released another iteration of the Sauvage scent in 2019: Dior Sauvage Parfum.

Now, I know Parfum and Eau De Parfum sound very similar – but they’re actually rather different.

An Eau De Parfum is typically around 15% fragrance oil, whereas a Parfum is closer to 20-30%.

This makes for a much stronger and more long-lasting scent, which is perfect if you’re looking for something that’s going to last all day (and into the night).

The Dior Sauvage Parfum opens with the same citrusy blast of bergamot as the EDT and EDP, but quickly dries down into a more smoky base.

If you’re looking for a sophisticated and grown-up scent, then this is definitely the one for you. It’s perfect for that first date with someone special.

In my opinion, this fragrance is more suited to the nighttime. Whereas the previous strengths could arguably be worn all day, the smokier element to this fragrance just screams evening sophistication.

Although Amber is not a featured note within this fragrance, the combination of smooth base notes gives off a very amber feel which lends itself to more intimate, romantic settings rather than summer days and high-powered office blocks.

    #5 Dior Sauvage Elixer

    sauvage elixer

As the most recent release in the Dior Sauvage colognes range, Dior Sauvage Elixer was released in 2021.

This scent was designed as a more intense and long-lasting version of the Dior Sauvage Parfum, and it definitely doesn’t disappoint when it comes to longevity, projection, and sillage.

But more to the point, this ‘Elixer’ version of Sauvage is probably their most exciting smelling fragrance. Unlike the other versions, Elixer features far sweeter notes than its predecessors, which isn’t necessarily bad.

You’ll get hit with cinnamon and nutmeg in the opening, quickly followed by a heart of fresh lavender.

And in the dry down, licorice and amber combine to create a smooth and creamy base that’s perfect for those intimate nights when romance is on the table.

To be frank, Dior Sauvage Elixer is definitely my new favorite fragrance from the range, and I’m sure it will be yours too. It’s fun, flirty, and just all-around intoxicating – everything a seductive cologne should be.

Be careful; your wallet may not thank you for picking this one up at the full price. As a result of this fragrance’s popularity and strength, a single 60ml bottle will set you back well over $100.

    #6 Bonus: Eau Sauvage

    dior eau sauvage

Fun fact: Dior Sauvage EDT was not the first Dior fragrance to shake things up in the world of colognes. Back in 1966, Dior released a very similar cologne under a very similar name: Dior Eau Sauvage.

So was this a very early version of what we now know as Dior Sauvage today? Kind of – but not really.

The Dior Eau Sauvage fragrance was actually designed by a different perfumer than the one who would go on to create Sauvage EDT in 2015.

Dior Eau Sauvage is a much sharper and more traditional cologne, featuring bergamot, lemon, basil, and rosemary notes. It’s a very soapy, clean-smelling scent that’s perfect for those warm summer days.

Although Dior Eau Sauvage isn’t as popular as its modern counterpart, I think it’s still worth mentioning as part of this article. After all, it did pave the way for Dior Sauvage EDT and all subsequent versions of this.

If you do the research, you’ll see that a lot of the notes used in the modern Dior Sauvage range were originally used in the 1966 Eau Sauvage version. Coincidence? I think not!

Consider Eau Sauvage’s popularity back in the day; it would have been stupid for Francois Demachy not to take inspiration from its formulation!

Will this cologne suit every guy? Probably not – it’s very classic and has that ‘mid-20th century smell’ that many older colognes seem to have. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try next time you’re in a department store!
