“Avatar: The Way of Water” has held the top spot at the box office for eight weeks, but “Knock at the Cabin,” a thriller by M. Night Shyamalan, finally overtakes it. The movie, which was released by Universal, made $5.4 million on its first day and is expected to take in about $14.5 million over the weekend. The post-apocalyptic thriller still beat out the other movies and came in first place, even though its final earnings were less than the $15 million to $20 million that had been predicted.
The movie, which stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Ben Aldridge, centers on a family whose vacation is cut short by four strangers who have visions of the end of the world. The outsiders assert that the family must voluntarily kill one of its members in order to stop the end of the world.
“Knock at the Cabin” has received mixed reviews from critics, with a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some people praised M. Night Shyamalan for his ability to create tension, while others called the movie “long, slow, and disappointing.” General audiences have given the movie a “C-,” which denotes mediocre feelings.
