“When there’s a whisk, there’s a way.” Bleecker Street has revealed an official trailer for the film version of the hit Broadway show Waitress: The Musical, which is coming to movie theaters nationwide in early December. Based on the 2007 movie written by Adrienne Shelly (and starring Keri Russell), the Waitress musical was one of the longest-running shows in recent Broadway history, playing a total of more than 1500 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. It first opened in Broadway in 2016. The show returned for a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre to celebrate Broadway’s re-opening in the fall of 2021. The Broadway show stars Sara Bareilles (who also wrote the music & lyrics) as Jenna, who’s joined by Drew Gehling, Charity Dawson, Dakin Matthews, Christopher Fitzgerald, Eric Anderson, and Anastacia McCleskey. Jenna is a pregnant, unhappily married small-town pie baker with big dreams. She meets a newcomer to her town and falls into an unlikely relationship as a last attempt at happiness. I adore the film, and I’ve been waiting to catch this musical – glad it’s finally coming to the silver screen. Have fun.

Waitress: The Musical brings the Tony-nominated Broadway phenomenon to the big screen – in theaters this fall. Featuring composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles as Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna fights to reclaim a long-forgotten part of herself. Through the support of her fellow waitresses and an unexpected romance, Jenna begins to find the courage to take a long-abandoned dream off the shelf. Waitress celebrates the power of friendship, dreams, the family we choose and the beauty of a well-baked pie. The movie version of Broadway’s Waitress: The Musical is directed by Brett Sullivan (of many filmed stage shows before). The stage version is directed by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus, with Jessie Nelson as creative advisor. Produced by Michael Roiff, Barry & Fran Weissler, Bareilles, Nelson, and Paul Morphos. Bleecker Street will debut Waitress: The Musical in theaters nationwide starting on December 7th, 2023 for 5 Nights Only. For more info + tickets, visit the official site. Want to watch?
