    Last Stop Larrimah Trailer

“There was utter hatred in this town…” HBO has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Last Stop Larrimah, an “extremely strange and captivating small-town mystery” from Down Under. This originally premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it’s now set to debut streaming on Max starting in October. Nestled deep in the Australian Outback is the town of Larrimah (see Google Maps) and its 11 eccentric residents. When one of them mysteriously disappears into thin air, the remaining residents become suspects and a long history of infighting is unveiled. After this man and his dog disappear, the remaining residents become suspects and the filmmaker’s get into some strange history turning over stones. Described in reviews as “a truly crazy entry into the true crime documentary pantheon.” This doc film was executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, who are on a roll with eccentric stories like this. From this trailer, my first thought: he was definitely fed to the crocodile. Makes sense. Or was it something else…?

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Thomas Tancred’s doc Last Stop Larrimah, from YouTube:

Nestled deep in the Australian Outback is the town of Larrimah. In 2017, one of Larrimah’s residents—an Irish emigre and pub-owner named Paddy Moriarty—dissappeared seemingly into thin air. As the film investigates the cold case in present day, lurid theories and morbid speculation abound, infighting and rivalries resurface. What begins as a good old fashioned whodunnit becomes an even more fascinating character study of the town’s 11 remaining eccentrics. Reviews describe the film as “a playful anatomy of a township scarcely big enough to be called that.” Last Stop Larrimah is directed by American filmmaker Thomas Tancred, making his feature directorial debut after also working as a producer on the TV series “Wipeout” and an exec producer on “Rooster & Butch” previously. Produced by Sean Bradley and Rebecca Saunders. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. HBO debuts Tancred’s Last Stop Larrimah doc streaming on Max starting on October 8th, 2023 this fall. Who’s curious enough?
