Jane’s Addiction have released the new song “True Love” — the second single from the band’s reunited classic lineup.
The track comes at an awkward time following the cancellation of the group’s remaining US tour dates due to singer Perry Farrell’s concerning behavior toward his bandmates. The turmoil culminated with Farrell throwing a punch at guitarist Dave Navarro during an onstage confrontation at a show in Boston last week, leading to Farrell being subdued by his stage crew and bandmates.
It was announced on Monday (September 16th) that the rest of the US tour would be cancelled, with Navarro and fellow Jane’s Addiction members Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins citing “a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell” in a joint statement. Farrell subsequently issued an apology to his bandmates and the fans.
As for the new song, “True Love” sees Jane’s Addiction in ballad mode, with soft percussion and Farrell’s voice cutting through the mix: “I remember when I first felt true love/ I was very young.” Navarro’s guitar peaks in and out as the track progresses to a final crescendo.
The current drama surrounding the band makes the already-sad song even more poignant. It follows the release of the harder “Imminent Redemption,” the first new music from the classic Jane’s lineup in 34 years.
