Today I aim to continue our crash course in skeezy slasher cinema with an underseen gem celebrating demented families, redneck rituals, and all the macabre mayhem Rob Zombie’s twisted imagination could muster – 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses!
Zombie goes for the gruesome gusto in his directorial debut, unleashing an all-out assault on the senses. The gonzo plot follows two couples touring roadside oddities who become trapped in the lair of the gleefully sadistic Firefly family. What follows is a relentless descent into a backwoods house of horrors, with no mercy for the poor visitors…or viewer!
The wickedly stylized violence and skuzzy 70s cinema vibe echo Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. But Zombie injects his redneck nightmare with an even more surreal, psychedelic tone. The Fireflys gleefully embrace their repulsive hillbilly heritage amid the cartoon carnage. Sid Haig and Bill Moseley have demented fun as the clan’s patriarch and notorious killer Otis. And Sheri Moon Zombie makes a memorably seductive and sinister baby doll.
