Best Ways To Waterproof Your Boots This Winter

    Date:

When the cold weather hits, it’s important to have a pair of waterproof boots to keep your feet warm and dry. Most men’s boots are not actually waterproof, so it’s important to take some steps to protect them from the rain and snow. In this article, we will outline the best ways to waterproof men’s boots during the winter months.

Why Should You Water Proof Your Boots?

It’s important to waterproof men’s boots in the winter months because it helps keep your feet dry, warm and comfortable. When you wear wet shoes, they can become cold and uncomfortable, leading to possible blisters or other irritations.

Water can also have a long-term effect on the integrity of your boots. Without correct treatment, water can damage the leather, sole and internal structure of your footwear and lead to cracks and breaks.

Waterproofing your men’s boots helps ward off mold growth and mildew that can damage the inner lining as well as the outside of the boot. Sure, leather is a pretty waterproof material. However, it does need to be properly treated with the right products in order to maintain its waterproofing properties.

    Using a Waterproof Spray

Waterproof sprays are designed to add an extra layer of protection against the elements. They can be applied on almost any type of men’s boot, including leather, fabric and synthetic materials.

Typically, waterproof sprays contain a combination of waxes, oils and silicone which help to create a breathable protective barrier that repels water.

For best results, apply the waterproof spray in thin coats, allowing adequate time for drying between each layer. It’s important to test the spray on a small area of your boots before applying it to the entire surface.

To apply the spray, simply shake the bottle and hold it about 6 inches away from your boots. Make sure to cover the entire surface of your boots, including any seams or laces. Allow the spray to dry completely before wearing them outside as this will ensure the best protection.

    Applying Water Resistant Boot Wax

Water-resistant boot wax can help to protect your boots against water and dirt, while also adding a layer of shine and conditioner. It’s important to apply it sparingly as too much can make your boots slippery and oily looking.

Water-resistant boot wax contains a combination of waxes and oils that help to protect the surface of your boots.

To apply, start by using a cloth or brush to rub the wax into the surface of your boots in small circular motions until it is fully absorbed. Allow it to dry completely before wearing them outside for maximum protection.

You shouldn’t over-apply boot wax. Sure, you might polish your boots on a weekly basis, but applying waterproofing wax should only be done on an as-needed basis. To tell when you need to top up your waterproofing wax, check to see if water beads off your boots.

Using Seam Sealant On Your Boots

Seam sealant is designed specifically for men’s leather boots, and is used to prevent water from seeping through any seams or crevices on the surface of the boots. Every boot has places where water could leak in – typically where you find stitching and gaps in material and structure.

Unless you’re wearing wellington boots, this is pretty unavoidable. So seam sealant is a must for any guy who wants to guarantee dry feet when wearing boots this winter.

To apply seam sealant, simply brush it onto the surface of your men’s boots in thin layers, making sure to cover all seams and crevices. Allow it to dry completely before wearing them outside for best results.

Which Products Are Best For Different Boot Styles?

Not all waterproofing products work with every style of boot on the market.

Depending on the material and construction of your boot, you may have to use a specific type of product to avoid damaging the surface of your boot’s fabric.

Sounds confusing, right? Don’t worry – I’ve got you covered.

How To Waterproof Full Grain Leather Boots

Full-grain leather boots are some of the most durable men’s boots on the market. They look great, last for many years and can be waterproofed with a variety of products.

However, if you want to keep your full-grain leather men’s boots looking good and performing well this winter, I would stick to waterproof boot wax.

    To apply:

    1. Clean your boots from top to bottom with a brush and cloth. This will ensure you don’t work any unwanted grime or dust into the surface of the leather when you begin to rub in your waterproofing wax.
    2. Apply a small amount of waterproofing wax to a dry, microfiber cloth and begin to work it into the leather in circular motions. Be patient – the wax needs time to soak in and dry completely.
    3. Buff the dry wax off with a clean, dry cloth. Doing so will ensure that the wax absorbs evenly and fully into the leather, giving you maximum waterproof protection.
    4. Apply a seam sealant to the stitched areas of your boots to finish off the protection process. Follow the instructions on your specific brand of sealant – this will help you get it right first time as the application process for different sealant products may vary.

    How To Waterproof Suede Boots

    Suede + water = disaster.

All the more reason to waterproof them!

I’ve never met a guy that doesn’t love wearing suede Chelsea boots. However, when it comes to fall and winter, a lot of guys shy away from them through fear of water damage.

I get it – no one wants to ruin their favorite boots. However, if you apply a good amount of waterproofing spray to your suede boots, there’s no reason you can’t wear them into the winter.

    To apply:

    1. Clean your boots with a high-quality suede brush.
    2. Make sure your waterproofing spray is certified as suitable for suede products! I can’t stress this enough – use the wrong product, and you could ruin your boots.
    3. Hold your spray at around 5cm away from the surface of your boots. Spray carefully and consistently in sweeping motions.
    4. Let your boots dry.
    5. Brush with a suede brush to restore the original look of your suede boots. The spray can make your boots look slightly dull – a suede brush will fix this.
