Rising hardcore band Scowl have announced their sophomore album, Are We All Angels. Ahead of its April 4th release, the Santa Cruz act has unveiled the single “Not Hell, Not Heaven.”
Scowl earned major buzz for their debut album, 2021’s How Flowers Grow. They returned with the song “Special” in October of last year, landing an honorable mention on Consequence‘s Heavy Song of the Week rundown.

“Not Hell, Not Heaven” is an uptempo melodic punk tune, with singer Kat Moss offering clean vocals over a driving guitar riff. It’s one of 11 tracks on Are We All Angels, which was produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Mannequin Pussy).
“It’s about feeling victimized and being a victim, but not wanting to identify with being a victim,” said Moss of the new single in a press release. “It’s trying to find grace in the fact that I have my power. I live in my reality. You have to deal with whatever you’re dealing with, and it ain’t working for me.”
The vocalist also noted a progression in the band’s sound from How Flowers Grow to Are We All Angels, explaining, “The majority of us were really not proficient musicians when this band started. It was very Germs-esque in that way, like baby’s first hardcore band, which is awesome. But now, we still might not know what we’re doing, but we have a better idea of what we want to do.”
Scowl are set to hit the road with Movements and Citizen on a North American tour that kicks off March 1st in Tempe, Arizona. Tickets are available here.
