Rob Zombie has been sharing updates on his upcoming ‘The Munsters’ film every step of the way, including a teaser trailer released last month that featured the first footage of Zombie’s version of Herman, Lily, and Grandpa Munster. But the one thing that has been missing has been an official trailer for the upcoming reimagining of the Transylvanian-American family.
That has now changed, as the horror director just released the first official trailer for his upcoming reboot of the ’60s sitcom which claims to bring you “The greatest love story ever told.”
‘The Munsters’ trailer opens with a brief glimpse of the creation of Herman Munster at the hands of Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang.
Following that is a shot of Lily, who appears to be looking for a man who makes her “blood run cold,” a pursuit that results in her father, better known to fans as Grandpa, offering to whip her up a hubby in his lab.
It appears that she’s in luck though, as Herman is also on a quest to find his true love.
The rest of the trailer focuses on the introduction and early stages of Herman and Lily’s relationship, a relationship that her father appears to disapprove of.
The closing seconds of the trailer also includes a shot of the three arriving at the iconic Munster home at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.
Despite the film being billed as a reboot of the original sitcom, which followed a family of monsters who moved from Transylvania to an American suburb, it appears Zombie’s version is an origin story of how Herman and Lily first met and fell in love.
This is a change from the original version of ‘The Munsters’ as, in the original pilot episode, Herman was married to a woman named Phoebe Munster. The character of Phoebe was soon recast as the producers felt she too closely resembled Morticia Addams.
The pilot would then be reshot with Yvonne De Carlo being introduced as Lily Munster in the second pilot, and she would remain until the series ended in 1966 after 72 episodes.
This origin story also breaks from the original format of the show, which featured an already happily married version of Herman and Lily Munster living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane along with their son Eddie, Grandpa, and Lily’s niece Marilyn.
We’ll have to wait to see if Zombie’s version will do the Transylvanian-American family justice, or if this new story will only serve as another unnecessary update to the 60s sitcom. Fans of the series might remember that, in 2012, Bryan Fuller attempted to bring the family back to the small screen with his series ‘Mockingbird Lane.’ The show was said to be a re-imagining of the original 1960s sitcom. It aired on October 26, 2012 as a Halloween special. NBC, however, decided to pass on the series.
Rob Zombie’s ‘The Munsters’ stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa Munster, Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, Jorge Garcia as Floop, Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp, Sylvester McCoy as Igor, Tomas Boykin as Lester, Jeremy Wheeler as Mr. Gateman, Roderick Hill as Mr. Goodbury, and Cassandra Peterson as Barbara Carr.
Original cast member Butch Patrick will also be returning as The Tin Can Man, along with Pat Priest in an undisclosed role.
‘The Munsters’ is scheduled to be released in September 2022.
