While discussing President Donald Trump’s foreign policies, he took a swipe at Swift’s relationship. The comedian said, “This world is so upside down now. It took [President] Trump three weeks to break up with Ukraine, and, Mexico, and Canada.” He further added, “And yet, Taylor Swift has [had] the same boyfriend for over a year.” 

Though he did not mention Kelce by name, the joke seemed to be directed at the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, whom Swift has been dating since the summer of 2023. This means the couple is approaching two years together. Previously, Swift was in a six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn, which ended in April 2023.

Maher’s comment quickly spread across social media. Many users criticized him for making a joke about Swift’s personal life.
